OPENING HYMN #169

(spoken responsively:)

  1. Come, O almighty King, Help us your name to sing;
    Help us to praise;

    Father all-glorious, In all victorious,
    Come and reign over us, Ancient of Days.

  2. Come, O incarnate Word, Gird on your mighty sword;
    Our prayer attend.

    Come and your people bless, And give your Word success,
    And let your righteousness On us descend.

  3. Come, holy Comforter, Your sacred witness bear
    In this glad hour!

    Your sev'nfold gifts impart; Rule now in ev'ry heart;
    Never from us depart, Spirit of pow'r.

  4. (Stand)
    To the great One-in-Three Eternal praises be
    Hence evermore!
    Your sovereign majesty  May we in glory see
    And to eternity  Love and adore.

PSALMODY Psalm 8

(spoken responsively)

        O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
                You have set your glory above the heavens.

        When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
        The moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

        What is man that you are mindful of him,
        The son of man that you care for him?

        You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings

                And crowned him with glory and honor.

        You made him ruler over the works of your hands;
                You put everything under his feet:

        All flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field,

        The birds of the air, and the fish of the sea.
        O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

        Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

                 As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

AT THE LECTERN

CHILDREN'S TALK

OLD TESTAMENT READING

from Genesis 1
(All speak bold words.)

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.  And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.

And God said, Let there be a firmament to divide the waters under from those above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven.

And God said, Let the waters be gathered together unto one place, and

let the dry land appear; and it was so. God called the dry land Earth; and the waters he called the Seas; and God saw that it was good.

And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass and herb yielding seed after its kind, and the tree yielding fruit; and God saw that it was good.

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth; and it was so: the greater light to rule the day,

and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. And God saw that it was good.

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creatures that have life, and fowl to fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.  And God made the beast of the earth after its kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creeps upon the earth after its kind; and God saw that it was good.  And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the seas, and the earth.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him;

male and female created he them.  And God blessed them, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.

And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.

GRADUAL (spoken together)

    Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!

    For from him and through him and to him are all things.

    To him be the glory forever! Amen.                                   (Rom. 11:33, 36)

EPISTLE READING

from 1 John 1 & 4

     That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes and our hands have touched, this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.  And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light as he is in the light,  we have fellowship with one another,  and the blood of Jesus his Son purifies us from every sin.

     Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone

who loves has been born of God and knows God.   Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.  This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.  This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.  Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.  No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

     This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.  And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

HOLY GOSPEL

(Stand)

John 1

     In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.  The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.  He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.  He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.  Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God — children born of God.

         The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.  No one has ever seen God, but the only-begotten God - who is at the Father’s side - he has made him known.

NICENE CREED

(spoken by all:)   (STAND)

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,  begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,  begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all  things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

   And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

(spoken together)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen
