"He's Risen, He's Risen"

Hymn #138, stanzas 1, 4, 5

(All: "Amen")

from Psalm 68   (spoken responsively)

Sing to God, praise his name, Extol him who rides on the clouds,

Who rides the ancient skies above, Who thunders with mighty voice.

God is in his holy dwelling!  He leads forth the prisoners with singing.

Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, Who daily bears our burdens.

Our God is a God who saves; From the Lord comes escape from death.

When you ascended on high,  You led captives in your train;

Summon your power, God;  Show us your strength as you have before.

You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary; You give power and strength to your people.  Alleluia!

(spoken responsively)

Alleluia! Sing to Jesus;   His the scepter, His the throne!

Alleluia! His the triumph,  His the victory alone!

Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion   thunder like a mighty flood:

“Jesus, out of ev’ry nation,  has redeemed us by his blood.

(All respond: “Amen.”)

from 1 Peter 4 & 5

Lector: “This is the Word of the Lord!”

ALL: “Thanks be to God!”

(spoken together:)

Christ has risen from the dead! God the Father has crowned him with glory and honor.  He has made him ruler over the works of his hands.  He has put everything under his feet!

Acts 1:1-11

Lector: “This is the Word of the Lord!”

ALL: “Thanks be to God!”

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering,

as though something strange were happening to you.  But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may

lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, for he cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm

in the faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power forever. Amen

Jesus’ final words to his disciples

In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive.  He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion he told them: “Do not leave Jerusalem but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

So when they met together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”   After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.  They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly 2 men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

CONFESSION OF FAITH - The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

            born of the virgin Mary,

            suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried.

            He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of

                  God the Father Almighty.

From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,

            the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen

from John 17

Pastor: “The Gospel of the Lord

ALL: “Thanks be to God!”

Jesus looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that he may glorify you.  For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.

“Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. Father, I brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. Now glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

“I have revealed you to those you gave me out of the world. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you.  Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name - the name you gave me - so that they may be one as we are one.  My prayer is not that you take them out of the world, but that you protect them from the evil one.  They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.  As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.”

PRAYERS (After each petition, all say, “Hear our prayer!”)

(spoken together)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever.

(All respond: “Amen.”)
