INVOCATION

OPENING HYMN

“Before Jehovah’s Awesome Throne”         LW #454

Before Jehovah's awesome throne,

O nations, bow with sacred joy;

Know that the Lord is God alone!

He can create, and he destroy.

We are his people, we his care,

Our souls and all our mortal frame.

What lasting honors shall we rear,

Almighty Maker, to your name?

Wide as the world is your command,

Vast as eternity your love;

Firm as a rock your truth shall stand

When rolling years shall cease to move.

CONFESSION OF SIN

PRAYER STANZA  -  KYRIE

Creating, loving Lord, you alone are God.

Yet we live as if you don’t exist.

Often we care more about “the good life”

than about being and doing good.

We want our lives to be easy,

while we care little about the lives of others.

We are so easily tempted by the world

and by our own All-important Self.

We think we can “have it all,”

without having you in our daily lives.

Forgive us, Father, for the sake of your Son,

and change us by your Spirit.

Breathe, oh, breathe thy loving Spirit

Into ev'ry troubled breast;

Let us all in thee inherit;

Let us find thy promised rest.

Take away the love of sinning;

Alpha and Omega be;

End of faith, as its beginning,

Set our hearts at liberty.

LW #286, st. 2

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy on us.

ABSOLUTION (All: “Amen.”)   -

RESPONSE (spoken)

LW #286, st. 4

Finish then thy new creation,

Pure and spotless let us be;

Let us see thy great salvation

Perfectly restored in thee,

Changed from glory into glory,

Till in heav'n we take our place,

Till we cast our crowns before thee,

Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

(All respond: “And also with you!” ... Amen.”)

OLD TESTAMENT READING

Jeremiah 15:15-21

A prophet’s lament.

“You understand, O Lord; remember me and care for me.  Avenge me

on my persecutors. You are long-suffering - do not take me away; think of

how I suffer reproach for your sake. When your words came, I ate them;

they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty. I never sat in the company of revelers or made merry with them; I sat alone because your hand was on me and you had filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unending and my wound grievous and incurable?  Will you be to me like a deceptive brook, like a spring that fails?”

Therefore hear what the Lord says: “If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman. Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them. I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to rescue and save you,” says the Lord. “I will save you from the hands of the wicked and redeem you from the grasp of the cruel.”

GRADUAL  (spoken by all:)

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!    How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!  For from him and through him and to him are all things.  To him be the glory forever! Amen.

(Rom. 11:33, 36)

EPISTLE READING

Romans 12:9-21

Live out the Gospel in your life!

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.  Honor one another above yourselves.  Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need.  Practice hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another.  Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil.Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible,a s far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.  Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.   On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.”  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

HOLY GOSPEL

Matthew 16:21-27      (Stand)

A challenge from Jesus.

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.  Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”  Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever would come after me must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be if you gain the whole world, yet forfeit your soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?  For the Son of Man will come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.”

HYMN RESPONSE “Come, Follow Me” (spoken)

LW #379, 1, 4, 5

"Come, follow me," said Christ, the Lord,

"All in my way abiding;

Your selfishness throw overboard,

obey my call and guiding.

Oh, bear your crosses, and confide

in my example as your guide.

“I teach you how to shun and flee

what harms our soul's salvation;

Your heart from ev'ry guile to free,

from sin and its temptation.

I am the refuge of the soul

and lead you to your heav’nly goal."

Then let us follow Christ, our Lord,

And take the cross appointed

And, firmly clinging to his word,

in suffering be undaunted.

For those who bear the battle's strain

the crown of heavenly life obtain.

HYMN RESPONSE

Love Divine, All Love Excelling

LW #286, st. 1, 3

Love divine, all love excelling,

Joy of heav'n, to earth come down!

Fix in us thy humble dwelling,

All thy faithful mercies crown.

Jesus, thou art all compassion,

Pure, unbounded love thou art;

Visit us with thy salvation,

Enter ev'ry trembling heart.

Come, Almighty, to deliver;

Let us all thy life receive;

Suddenly return, and never,

Nevermore thy temples leave.

Thee we would be always blessing,

Serve thee as thy hosts above,

Pray and praise thee without ceasing,

Glory in thy perfect love.

LORD’S PRAYER

(spoken together)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen

CLOSING PRAYER

(All: “Amen.”)

CLOSING HYMN (spoken)  WOV #776

 Be Thou my Vision,

O Lord of my heart;

Naught be all else to me,

save that Thou art:

Thou my best thought,

by day and by night,

Waking or sleeping,

Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my wisdom,

and Thou my true word;

I ever with Thee and

Thou with me, Lord;

Thou my soul's shelter,

Thou my high tower,

Raise thou me heav'nward,

O Pow'r of my pow'r.

Riches I heed not,

nor vain, empty praise,

Thou mine inheritance,

now and always:

Thou, and Thou only,

first in my heart,

Great God of heaven,

my treasure Thou art.

Light of my soul,

after victory won,

May I reach heaven's joys,

O bright heaven's Sun!

Heart of my own heart,

whatever befall,

Still be my vision,

O Ruler of all.

BLESSING
